First series is from Sault Chamber of Commerce with 11 Questions

1. Economic Growth and Business Attraction

Sault Ste. Marie needs new investment, business growth and quality jobs to strengthen its economy and municipal tax base. What specific actions would you take during your term to attract private-sector investment, support the growth of existing businesses and encourage new businesses and jobs, and how would you measure success? Beyond steel and the public sector, which one or two sectors do you believe the Sault can credibly build a competitive advantage in over the next decade?

A: Currently the largest opportunity presented to our city is the Port of Algoma. We have a once in a generation chance to diversify, expand and create employment for Sault Ste Marie. The Port is estimated to create 2400 jobs directly. This would make it the largest employer in the Soo. Overtaking Algoma Steel and the Sault Area Hospital. The Port would support existing businesses and create an environment for secondary and tertiary businesses to thrive. The Province and Feds are ready to invest with the Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority. What will the city contribute, $ 13 millions of land and in kind services to support and connect the location. That means no tax increases for residents to build the port.
